Actually, I'm going to have to go in anyways it appears. I know what I have to get, and I'm just going to put the blinders on and make a beeline for it.
Which nifty gadget are you referring to Paint? I might have two or three by now. |

We've almost gone through one roll and I'm geting more tonight. I'll let y'all know before I run out. Has anyone seen a better price than what I'm offering out there? If so, let me know.

you got the best price Todd. even eBay wants $2 a foot.
If I didnt get the cheap stuff from the furniture store for free, I'd take 10' or so... We'll see how the cheap stuff holds up. (its what they use to wrap sofas during shipping)
a tip: wash the tyvek in a machine, it'll soften up. Line dry. _________________ http://www.arizonahikers.com/board/albums/albwb18/BRIDGE.sized.jpg

Re: Tyvek Fabrication Tips

I don't reccommend sewing Tyvek at all. The seam is incredibly weak and not waterproof. The trouble is that Tyvek is very slippery and there is not enough friction in the seam to distribute the load. This problem is compounded by the fact that the holes made by the needle do not shrink like holes made in fabric do. If you must sew, use a polyester upholstery thread with a small needle (I think a #9 but I may be wrong, it's been a while since I've sewn any Tyvek) and the needle should have a rounded tip, not a sharp pointed one. The rounded tip compacts the material around the hole, making it marginally stronger. I would use 8-12 stitches/inch.
But seriously, i wouldn't sew it. The indoor/outdoor carpet tape made for mounting astro turf (home depot has it) will give you a much stronger and waterproof seam. We use an adhesive transfer tape that works incredibly well but it's difficult to find. It's made by 3M and uses the 300LSE adhesive.

For tie-outs, i use 5mm cord. This I tape to the tyvek so that 8" of the cord is taped, forming a loop at the edge where the tie-out should be. There are some tricks to designing this that would best be illustrated by a photo or a drawing. I'll try to get an image up soon and I'll post a link.
Grommets never worked for me. They sort of work if you overlap the tyvek so that you put the grommet through at least 4 layers of material. But even then, they tear out when things get windy. |

54 replies and >700 views, what is this Tyvek stuff that generates such interest? One could speculate that this is a code for something really fun or illegal or both or . . . . _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

Shawn, I'm going to make a backcountry slip and slide with some of mine In the winter I may let some ice over in some special place and we'll have an AZH luge run.
It's just a lightweight fottprint alternative. You can make rain suits, tarps, tents and all kinds of stuff with it.

Someone was asking me about this stuff the other day and I'm getting some out for Kurthzone this week. I've still got plenty if anyone needs some. My roll is 5 feet wide and I'll cut you off any length you need.
Thanks,
