Why not feed the extra hot dogs to the dogs? Every ounce counts, every step of the way. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

They weren't in my pack or I might have tired feeding them to Harley....but they were veggie dogs.........................
I don't think any of the others had a problem with the weight of their packs (tough Diva chicks) so the weight of a couple of hotdogs didn't seem like much. Me on the other hand, I was considering eating my sleeping bag in order to shed a few pounds. |

Luxury items...mmmmm...my favorite thing about backpacking.
I'm VERY big on luxury items. I pack heavy because I can handle the weight (at 215 lbs even at 1/4 of my weight that is 50+lbs. - plus I'm a fairly strong hiker so it isn't that big of a deal).
Anyway - I like taking things on the trail to make others jealous. Such items have included:
- "Gourmet" food items (e.g: Lobser and/or shrimp sheish-kabobs, roasted game-hens, full Denver omelet with TONS of fixings, etc.)
- Extra-thick Therma-rest matresses (the big 2 or 3 inch thick pads)
- Cardigan sweater
- Toilet seat (for placement over the wood box outhouses available in some areas)
- Bath robe
- Full camp chair
- Dutch oven (and meals for the dutch oven have included: lasagne, pot-roast, pinapple upside-down cake, peach cobbler)
- Watermellon - nice and cold
- Full, double-wide rope hammock (with the wooden support slats)
Of course, the amount and type of luxury items depends on the lenght and time of the trip. Obviously if I'm going for extended periods of time I have to provide more room for food - so luxury items become smaller and lighter.
Most of the above items were on short 1 or 2 nighters of under 20 miles. Things like the toilet seat, sweatter or big-donkey Therm-a-rest are more common on almost any backpacking trip. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

Hmmmm
Isn't "backpacking" and "luxury items" an oxymoron?
Doesn't a simple roll of toliet paper become a luxury?
When Holiday Inn comes up with a luxury campsite, I'm there!!

If Mary Phyl sees this thread someone will have to give her oxygen! I'm feeling a little faint myself. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

I think "Cabana Burro" would be more appropriate in Jared's case...

I'm thinking Susan didn't mean that Jared was to BE the "cabana boy"...just that the key is to HAVE a "cabana boy"!!!
However, I could be wrong.... _________________ ~Tracy

Got me? Doesn't take much to confuse me.
So is the search still on?? LOL!
Should we hold auditions?
Could be interesting.

I prefer a frisbee. Bonus points in that it can double as a plate/bowl (when properly cleaned)

Um...no...(although my wife is a massage therapist and has taught me a few tricks of the trade - so I would make a servicable cabana boy in many respects).

Slightly more accurate, but still...no, thank you...
