here's mine:
Reflective emergency sleeping bag
20' nylon cord
First aid tape
dental floss
Chlor-Floc water purification tablets
Trojan extra large nonlubricated condom (to serve as a water bladder, what else?!?)
whistle
LED light
gauze
1oz container 1st aid cream
unbreakable comb (for cacti)
signal mirror
small screwdriver (for my spectacles)
Self adhereing ace bandage
bic lighter
chapstick
hairtie
small knife
small multi-tool
sharpening stone
assortment of safety pins
needle with thread
tweezers
signal mirror
2 ounce bottle hydrogen peroxide (disinfectant)
2 ounce bottle everclear (disinfectant, firestarter, tasty)
2 ounce bottle assorted pills (you know, leuds, uppers, downers etc... )
In addition I always carry a five inch fixed blade knife and a flint rod (thanks glen) on my hip.
This all fits into a bag about 7"x2"x5" and always goes in whatever backpack I'll be wearing. The goodies in here are enough to cover almost any contingency you can think of. Most were recomendations from the survival class I took last semester. I think I'm taking the advanced survival class this semester so I might come up with a few new goodies to put in there. _________________ Cogito ergo ambulo cum sacculo

Green tea! Do not leave home without it.
Good thread Abe. I use the daypack approach.
I do not leave home without it either. Too often, I end up in some strange place that needs to be explored. In the little black bag is my fire starting supplies, duct tape, first aid, water purification tabs, signal mirror, whistle and the like. I keep a knife like Matt's on my pack and my Benchmade Mini RSK (Ritter Survival Knife) in my pocket. I mostly use a little folder for slicing fruit and other utility chores. Have to have it close with my Moleskine pocket notebook. I just wish my small motor skills were sharper but my handwriting has always been that way, legible but not the pretty hand of some. Have to put down those fleeting thoughts and visions on paper.
I will not step off the pavement into the desert lands without all of the above. Solo into the backcountry means be prepared and know your skills among other things.
Of course, there is one more thing I never leave behind either. You can guess what that is. _________________ Seize from every moment its unique novelty and do not prepare your joys

Wow! Thanks all for sharing. I got some food for thought.
Glen, is this the legendary "MOLESKINE" notebook? Picture looks like it. I ask because this is what I pack in my pocket while hiking. _________________ "Don't complicate what ain't complicated." |
