Alrighty, its fall so its time to start thinking of the next Painted Desert exploration and easy overnight backpack into the Petrified Forest or nearby environs. "Mountain Lion Mesa" will be a dayhike sortie with probably "accommodations" taking place in the southern wilderness northeast of Agate House. Possible side trip option to Chavez Pass Pueblo for those of your returning to Phoenix, as it is on the way between Holbrook and Strawberry.
Total of 8 folks for overnight. Dayhikers are welcome - they don't affect permit limits.

Whaddaya say?

Sweet! I'm new here and I figured there was a mysterious code way of letting the experienced hikers know the date, but nope, it's just hidden somewhere else. How far away is this place? I live in Tempe.

Its an hour and a half east of Flagstaff. Do a google maps route search from your address to Petrified Forest National Park for an estimate on drive times for you.

Often times the date is posted in the subject line with the event title to make it easier to find....some like to make it a mystery! Not saying the Pagerob is that kinda guy or anything. I am just saying.......

I can do the dayhike. I'm only about an hour and a half away from the park and I've been wanting to get out there. Last time I was there was about, oh, a decade and a half ago? It's been too long.

What's the status on this hike? Is it going to be this coming weekend or has it been moved to another weekend in October (or perhaps Nov). my fingers are crossed

I'm still holding out hope for this one, but I won't be available this weekend.

Given the number of people that have signed up I'm thinking it would be a good idea to move it to another weekend.

I can ditto that. I'm going to Moab this coming weekend, but if y'all are at Putrified Forest I'll wave as I pass by! Wink

As there hasn't been any real interest in this hike for this weekend, but lots for other times, I think we'll go ahead and postpone this for another weekend. Any suggestions from the group?

Maybe early November. I suppose mid would be alright...possibly. It does snow out there and when the snow melts the mud is super nasty.

It will depend how early in November you are planning it. I plan to explore the Painted Desert in the future. It was so beautiful to drive through...Just let us know when!

Hold on folks, I misspoke. When I said 1st weekend, I actually meant the 8th and 9th. I don't want to have to get up early the day after Halloween. That's our new (firm) target date. And if no one can make it, than I'll go myself that weekend! Twisted Evil
