I'm really not understanding what any of this is supposed to mean. _________________ "Your day-glo ballet days are over." Ancient chinese proverb.

I'm starting to notice the price of gasoline is once again a big factor in how I decide to budget any trips.
On the other hand, bowling is really expensive here in Kingman, BTW.
I guess backpacking and hiking are still two of the
cheapest forms of entertainment...REI refund or not.
And there are many extra items I would still
love to buy that I'm putting off, also
...Especially a ground pad/blanket
with some degree of luxury to it. Looks like about $100 to get a good quality one.

i found the full length Nightlite pad from Gossamer Gear to be just as comfortable as my Prolite 3, difference being $55
the nightlite is bulky, but if youre used to strapping a pad onto your pack it shouldnt matter, right?
if i were a ground sleeper, id get a Outoor Research Downmat 7. those are pricey, tho. _________________ http://www.arizonahikers.com/board/albums/albwb18/BRIDGE.sized.jpg

Thanks! I hadn't come across those brands yet in my search!
I noticed there was a long article about hammocks on the Hike Az site.
People are raving about them! _________________ "Half the walk is but retracing our steps."

i wrote that. thanks, glad you like it.
hey, to be honest.. do you know what completley and totally sold me on hammocking?
I set up my tarp, about 7' high, then proceeded to build a small campfire under it while i sat in my hammock and read a book. My campmates were either: confined to their tiny tents, or standing in the rain lloking like drowned chickens.
btw, REI sells both Hennessy hammocks and ENO (eagles nest outfitters) but since its such a newborn shelter choice, most of the stuff is made by cottage guys.
But, a HH expedition may be the ticket even tho the stock tarp is small, its pro'lly enough for all year AZ use. They weigh about 2.5 lbs, including all components. (you just need a nice wide pad, or an underquilt)
now thats what I would use my dividend for! _________________ http://www.arizonahikers.com/board/albums/albwb18/BRIDGE.sized.jpg

Are those hiking poles I see as being a part of the structure of the hammock? _________________ "Half the walk is but retracing our steps."

yeah, the poles are a way to work the "multi-use" philosophy into my hiking. the black hammock in the above link comes with aluminum 2-pc. poles but mine work fine, and saves 7oz. W/O the poles, my hammock and all suspension components weigh 12.4 ounces.
This is my UL hammock, i have another for bug season that is a different style, both radically different from one another exept the end result: comfort. On my "end gathered" hammock, i use the poles to make a porch with the rainfly (tarp) when weather permits:
*this photo was last month at Tony Ranch where it rained for 16 hours.
sorry for hijacking the thread, and stuff. _________________ http://www.arizonahikers.com/board/albums/albwb18/BRIDGE.sized.jpg

This is a great concept:

It's my fault---about the thread---I'm picking
up on the 'etiquette' of a forum.
I shouldn't have changed subjects.
I'll probably transplant further discussions
on hammocks, ground pads, etc. to equipment.
Thanks for the info!
Maybe I should start something new about Comfort in Camping.
I'm glad you are writing articles about your stuff! _________________ "Half the walk is but retracing our steps."

The older I get the less understood my humor is. My proposition is that it is mean / cruel to suggest an avid hiker, climber, back packer substitute outdoor activities with an indoor sport like bowling. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

I got one too, but it only served a deeper raid on my pocket, just ordered an Osprey Exos 58 pack, and a titanium cook pot. Still bleeding a little but the 20% off the pack was irresistable. I suppose I could calculate the $/oz these two puchases are reducing my pack weight, but it might make me cry. I think this is the first born of my third generation of gear. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |
