This poem is inspired by two birds we observed
from the top of Thumb Butte swooping together
in an aerial acrobatic dance.
I imagined what the dance must be like
for the birds and how my relationship with Big John
has parallels to their dance.
Parallel Love (Bird's Eye View)
Parallel wingtips begin the dance
Mirroring swoops with barely a glance
Amazing what genes will tell us to do
Over and over spirals as one becomes two
Feathers fan wide in aeronautical flow
Breast faces breast, beak to beak, climb and go
Meeting again on the parallel plane
Wishing to touch--gleaning gravity's gain
"Meant for each other!" melodically we sing
Nature's choice is elite--Hearts beat love's wing
We rise and we fall in our parallel flight
Free from earth's girding, a bird's eye delight
Sailing suspended we trace exultation
Linked in love's web, it's a time/space equation
Wind is the hammock to our afternoon swirls
I follow you, following me...Spring unfurls

I shared that hike at Thumb Butte with Mer,
and I too was inspir'd:
Parallel Love
My love and I upon a hill did walk
west'ring sun all amber and gold
stormclouds raced, we didn't talk
trading warmth, felt not the cold
Above the topmost crag a crow appeared
then another came, just the same
through that highest space they steered
in racing glorious flight untamed
At first apart then brought together
swerving, dodging, side by side
heedless of the coming weather
wingtips joined, the two did glide
Bodies touching, folded wing
falling 'cross the sky so long
then veering off, each one did sing
a separate version of their song
That song was written on the air
in arcing golden glyphs of fire
spelling out a joyous dare
to fate, above that lonely spire
Looking up, we felt us bound
to two dark birds upon the sky
soaring united without a sound
and in our way, we also fly...
