It's too hot to go outside and read the thermometer.
Any idea how much of that temperature in the sun is being conducted by heat on the chair cushion? _________________ ~Tracy

Probably exactly the same amount as if I was sitting on that chair cushion, right?
The heat blew up one of the thermometers. The display went solid black. |

yeah, I'm thinking sitting on that chair cushion is not the place to be at the moment (unless you can float it in the pool! ) _________________ ~Tracy

That would probably break it!
If you have or can get your hands on Today's AZ Republic, read Clay Thompson's Valley 101 column on page B-8. It explains why your thermometer isn't reading the heat of a sunny area....it's reading how hot the direct sunlight is making the thermometer just like the direct sunlight heats the sidewalk and the street. |

I think it was around 88 or 90 today. I hiked on the Overland Trail. |

A friend sent me a photo of his patio thermometer in the shade in Tucson. It read 111.
Now, if anyone reading this is spending their first summer in Arizona, especially in Phx., Tucson or other desert towns, you will really understand the reason why we don't have daylight savings! Everyone eagerly awaits dusk, because with the dry air, things cool off quickly. This was especially true decades ago, before there were hundreds of square miles of pavement and cement buildings, which hold the heat and tend to keep the temperature above 100, even at 10 p.m. However, if you are outside of the city, you can still notice this cooling effect. |

108 in Vegas Saturday.
I'm headed up past 10,000 today where it is not expected to reach 80.
Actually, NOA says 79 at the trailhead and 70 up top for the high.

Sounds nice. I'm going somewhere, but haven't decided yet. Busy this a.m. Hiked yesterday at 9,000--it was warmish up there. Maybe above 85. |
