I spent this weekend southeast of Florence on the end of a pick-mattock, grubbing out trees and bush on the AZ Trail--Boulders Segment. This is my second such adventure, and a good escape from the cubicle. It's a good feeling to see your accomplishment, something that is not always clear from the cube. Last month we completed .55 mile of trail, this weekend we did the brush removal for ~.65 miles, and got that done to complete the segment. It'll take another weekend or two to finish the wash crossings and contour in some tread on the slopes.
I was struck by the amount of work it takes to make a trail that you can walk over in ten minutes, and the care the steward takes to make it right.
If you are feeling like "giving back" a little, any of these projects can use the help. Check the AZT website.
(Where else can your weekend entertainment lead to a tax deduction? Mileage you know.) _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

This one sounds like fun, and with the camping facilities it should be quite comfortable. Anyone considering it may PM me for ride possibilities.
VOAz FLASH!
HIGHLINE/AZ TRAIL - FINAL FLASH
April 16 & 17
AZ/Highline Trail Maintenance
Camp Geronimo, North of Payson
Registration for this event remains open for another dozen volunteers who
are needed to help with a variety of tasks to bring the historic trail back
into shape after a long and hard winter. The work will be mostly moderate, with
some more difficult sections, and will include: trail maintenance, repair and
cleanup; erosion control and correction of drainage problems; cleanup from
downed trees; and possible reworking of some switchbacks.
Camping and staging at the Boy Scouts' Camp Geronimo offers potable water and flush toilets. There is ample room for tent camping or campers. Bring a friend or two, and join us for a fun and productive weekend of trail maintenance and improvement. The food will be fabulous!
Please register at http://voaz.org/voaevents.htm for further details and directions.

I'd love to but I think I'm already scheduled to work. My manager does a lot of trail work though and he likes to give time off for it, so I might ask him and see what he says. He even offered to send me to some sort of paid training for trail maintenance. So we'll see. _________________ Cogito ergo ambulo cum sacculo

Sycamore Canyon-Taylor Cabin was the objective this weekend but snow is predicted. We desert dwellers have options regarding snow so I opted out. Fortuitously, an email arrived Thursday from the trail steward for this segment, looking for help, so that's the plan. Doesn't seem like 3 years since the last time.
Have a good weekend everyone. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

March 28-30
Another great weekend in the high cool country doing well while doing good. We (Eric, Carolyn, Anne, Julie, and me) picked, pruned, scraped and shoveled to build 165 feet of the Salida Gulch trail at Lynx Lake Rec Area near Prescott. Several other crews did likewise, adding a bunch of trail in this continuing effort. Making a 3 foot versus 2 foot wide tread is an exponential increase in work. REI came through with good food and some cool loot, VOAz did its usual excellent organization, and the weather cooperated wonderfully. We took a short side trip after completing our sections this morning for the pictographs not far from the trail. Check out voaz for a full report. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

I'm gonna have to check out the site for dates of things. Was on-call this week and again 11-17 Apr, so I'm out for those. But maybe another one in the future. _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

This is the kind of stuff I'd love to participate in when I've moved out there! Wish I could be out there for the April 16-17. Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend.

I wonder if there is a Nevada version of the voaz? _________________ "Surely all God's people, however serious or savage, great or small, like to play. I sent the manager up at Hart Prairie a message asking what dates might be available for us to come up and bust bunns. Anyone interested can keep an eye out and once I get some times I'll post them to see if we can raise a crew. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |
