While riding my mtn. bike this morning, came across a badger quite cheerfully digging a hole. Thought it might be after prey but suspect it may have been digging or remodeling its den.

Your picture depicted a red x, it was actually more earth tone color with facial strips and a cheerfull grin.

The few badgers I've seen in the wild were not grinning, they were hissing and snarling ready to take me on. One was in the Nebraska Sandhills and the other was in the Wind River Mountains. That one was pretty small but he/she made up for it with attitude.

I encountered a very large badger on Mt. Nebo in Utah. It was walking down the trail right towards me when I noticed it (I hike looking at my feet sometimes on steep grades) and so I yelled at it. It looked at me and kept coming but then just kind of ambled off the trail and passed me about ten feet to my right. Close enough for me and
probably the badger. After it passed me it ambled back onto the trail and continued on its way. When I remembered my camera, it was too late to get a decent pic. Sad

I awoke one night last year on the North Rim to a badger digging a hole a few feet from my tent. I shined my headlamp at it (is that correct english?). It stared at me for a second and then ambled off. I think that was the first time I've ever seen a badger.

I saw one up on the Manti-La Sal crossing this old forest road. Only time I've ever seen one in the wild.
