Does anybody know of any good hiking in Mexico, within a couple hours of the Arizona border?

Bill

Picacho Del Diablo, 10,171, Baja California Norte.

http://www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=1537 Also use Google to find more info.

Even if you don't want to do the peak, the approach canyon, near San Felipe, is awesome. Big horn sheep, running stream, etc., just gorgeous. Need a 4X4 to get to the "trailhead," as I recall. It's been 30 years.....

Pico De Orizaba http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150192/pico-de-orizaba.html

Ok, I guess it's a little further south than that, but it's on my list.

For closeness and outstandingness.... I second Mike's "Sierra Del Pinacate Reserve"... actually in Mexico called the Reserva de La Biosfera de El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar. Amazing country if your into volcanic geology... volcanology?.. or just pretty country. Half way to Puerto Penasco on the right is the Reserve "headquarters".... right off the highway. Stop there and get info on drug runner activity.. a crude map... buy a hat.. make a donation. Pretty much ignored by us party animals going to Rocky Point. Outstanding country. Go climb the Sierra Pinacate as there is a trail to the top I am told. Was there on "business" and a "tour".. seen the endangered antelope they have there (they tell me that was a real treat), but want to go back for the Sierra Pinacate hike with my new SPOT - Personal Satellite Messenger & GPS Locator Very Happy Thanks for reminding me.. I am making my plans.

My boys went to the Pinacates with their Scout troop many times. They really enjoyed it. And yes, very close to Tucson, Bill.

No water at Pinacate--I remember one whachacallit--big rock place that held some water but I could not find it today.
