It's truly awesome. One of my all-time favorites. I have it on videocassette. I haven't watched it in a long while, because I can never stand to see Gus die all over again. No question in my mind it's Duvall's greatest role. Casting was perfect, screenplay great, photography wonderful, etc. etc. And being a mini-series, rather than a regular movie, it has time to do things a regular movie doesn't have time for. A person can get really immersed in it, for sure.
Have you read the book? If you haven't: McMurtry's original ending is a bit darker and less optimistic than the movie's. Typical of McMurtry. But it's a really good book. Plus, there is a whole series with the same characters, I think about 5 books. I've read them all--some I liked better than others. Can't remember specifics any more, though, other than some are set before Lonesome Dove and some afterwards, but I believe he actually wrote Lonesome Dove first. |

Duvall said once that Lonesome Dove was his favorite role. Pretty amazing since he's been in so many great movies like The Godfather, To Kill A Mockingbird, Bullit, True Grit...
Truly great movie/mini-series... |
