Fires are breaking out all across the state and the rest of the SW. Going to be a busy week. |

I guess the Birdie fire which is 12 miles South of Flagstaff started on Friday. It was small then, but big enough that I could see flames from I-17. It looked to be only a mile or so behind some of the ranch type houses along the highways. The SWCC site say it's at 900 acres now.
"BIRDIE (900 acres, 0% contained) was started by lightning in Coconino National Forest 12 miles S of Flagstaff. BIRDIE poses potential threat to homes, other structures, a campground, and Mormon Lake Village. Tony Sciacca's Arizona Central West Type 2 Incident Management Team is assigned, along with 5 Type 1 crews, 3 Type 2 crews, 3 helicopters, 11 engines, 2 dozers, 4 water tenders, 50 overhead, 267 total personnel. One of our crews came back and we sent another one in the rotation to the Birdie fire. Have a cycling event later this month and another in August in the area. |

I was driving up Lake Mary Road on Friday night and I could see the fire. Must have been shortly after it started. Liz and I camped at Ashurst Lake on Friday night. Saturday morning there was a lot of smoke to the south and the fire seemed to have grown considerably. Liz and I wondered if we should leave. We ended up fishing for a few hours. Around 11am a forest service person told us we had to leave. Since the wind was strong, the fire was too unpredictable. Besides that, Hot Shot crews were coming to the area and they were going to use Ashurst Lake to fill the water buckets on the helicopters. We wished we could hang around to watch that, but about 30 minutes later a thunderstorm materialized out of nowhere. I don't think the choppers flew on Saturday.
Driving home on the 17 today, the smoke looked worse and the fire appeared to be moving closer to the 17. _________________ "Your day-glo ballet days are over." Ancient chinese proverb.

The "big" fire down here in Tucson tonight is the Alambre Fire which is burning just two miles from the observatories on Kitt Peak. This fire story led all three local TV newscasts here.

Write a PM to GTG and ask for permissions and he'll plug you in. After that, you can just go to the gallery and the prompts will be there for you.....if I remember correctly. _________________ "Surely all God's people, however serious or savage, great or small, like to play. So the photo needs to be in the gallery first? I don't want to put it in the gallery. You and Tim and Suz include photos in some of your forum posts (ie: Escalante Route, Pacheta Falls) and that's what I want to do. How do I do it? _________________ "Your day-glo ballet days are over." Ancient chinese proverb.
