Hi! I just discovered this board and love it! I'm hoping someone can help me out. I have a friend coming out in October to go camping, but we can't decide where to go. He is not a backpacker, per se, so we want to car camp. We went to the North Rim last year, but didn't make it to Toroweap, so that is an option, but maybe something with some water?
I would like to go to Aravaipa, but I don't know if it is too tough. It doesn't seem like it, but I know you can't car camp, correct? Any ideas for a 2 day hiking area would be appreciated! Thanks!! |

For N.Rim you could try Camping at the Bill Hall Trailhead ( no water) but great at rim views (Late Oct may mean snow possibility) Access roads are great .
Indian Hollow Campground (Trailhead for Thunder River Trail)is another possibility...
Aravaipa will require backpacking before you can really camp. so it is not a car camp _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

Aravipa is an easy hike, just get a permit well in advance. October is a great time of year for it, but good luck getting a permit. I've camped in the parking lot there before (west entry), the ranger didn't mind and there were no signs saying I couldn't. I heard there is a campground near the trailhead, but I didn't see it. _________________

Some suggestions:
Fossil Creek area would be my first choice for an October hike.
Tonto Creek area. Camp somewhere back in the woods, and hike Horton one day and the Christopher Creek Box on another. Do the box only IF you have at least minimal rockclimbing skills. You can do the Box without ropes, but you need to be fairly brave about heights, and I am not responsible if you break a leg. *grin* Oh, note, the box is GREAT trout fishing. Horton is easy.
Chevelon Canyon, if you feel up to a bit of a drive. (2.5 hours past Payson) There's a very nice and generally uncrowded campground at Chevelon Crossing with pit toilets but no water. There is water about half a mile upstream, most of the time. Don't try this one if there's any chance of snow.
Sheeps' Crossing on the verde, if it's too cold for Mogollon Rim, but be aware that this can be a party spot at certain times ...
