A friend is coming into town tonight and he has asked me to take him out with the detector to look for nuggets! I told him there is no gold around here and it to hot but he IS crazy so that doesn't matter! My Question is ,Does anyone know where a good place to go near the valley? _________________

You could always send him out to the Supes to look for the Lost Dutchman mine! Give him a map and directions--preferably on an old sheepskin with burnt edges. (I think he must be watching too much of that Outdoor Channel TV where they have the gold panning show.)
I don't know about a metal detector, but you could take him to the Verde or Salt River, and while you swim he could try his hand at panning. That seems like the most polite thing to do. |

Backside of Mt. Lemmon has always been popular. There are a lot of active claims in that area, but I think you can pan recreationally, also. We did it once with Scouts--everyone got a few flakes of gold in their pans. I can't recollect now which creek we went up, but I think it was near either Peppersauce or Stratton Canyon. You have to have water for that, though. And I'll bet those are dry right now. And whatever you do, you don't pan on someone's claim! They mark them somehow, I think.
I have to say that hobby is not for the A-type personality. Very VERY slow--patience is required! You can't be looking around you going, "Gee, I could be hiking up right there but instead here I am, grubbing in this creek and getting a backache!" |

I don't think gold will register on a metal detector.

I think they make one especially for that. At least, I've seen it on the Outdoor Channel.
Some people like to go to the outdoors, but feel they have to have a reason or be DOING something, like fishing, gold panning, etc., etc. To me those sports have always seemed a little fussy--you have to mess with all the equipment that goes with the sport. Especially fly fishing--that is one fussy sport! I just like to hike. I also like to sit, doing absolutely nothing and look at the view. If I'm backpacking and feel bored in the evening I always have a paperback novel to read. |

Yep. Many folks think they need a reason to be outside; even those who love it. _________________ "Surely all God's people, however serious or savage, great or small, like to play.
