Reavis Ranch Backpack......Lots of alternatives; Hike in Friday May 23 and camp one, two or three nights; hike in Saturday and stay one or two nights or make it a day hike, etc. Think everyone who did this back in February will tell you they had a ball regardless of the mud and cold and should be even better conditions this time! I missed it in Feb. but ain't gonna miss it this time.

Cindy, I will be the first to admit I'm crazy, but those that hike with me will attest that it is a harmless, crazy, unless I get carried away on my solo adventures then sometimes it gets me into trouble. _________________ Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. |

It was an entomologists heaven ....enuf bugs, both flying and on foot to satisfy any bug lover; as for the rest of us......we did as all backpackers should do.....layered.....first a layer of sun screen followed by a layer of insect repellent (that some of these bugs mothers must have weaned them on! ) followed later by another layer of SPF and then another layer of insect repellent followed by more SPF, etc, etc, etc.
But the company was great; glad Jaimi gave in and did the hike ....she was ravishing in her baggy flannel PJ's and, like the rest of us, ravished by the bugs! Photos will be up sometime in the next couple of days. _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

Posted a report under Reavis Ranch Trip Log. I too had a great time.
Hoolie hope you guys had a nice hike out, your direction. We really enjoyed the views today as their was no haze in the air, like at Circlestone yesterday.
You forgot to add in layers of sweat and dirt with the SPF and bug spray _________________ Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. |

Reavis Ranch photos are up. The first eleven photos are from Sunday, May 18, when GTG, Kurthzone and I hiked in to check out the water supply and campsites. BTW, once you've clicked on the thumbnail, click again on the photo to get an even larger photo.

Messami and I got started on the trail at 6:56 PM Friday. We got to the ranch at 10:15, just in time to wake up Hooli from a tequila assisted refuge from the Reavis Air Force. The bugs had abated when we rousted the old goat but by next morning all squdrons had left the hangars and were airborne in full force. I have not seen the likes of such bug populations since I left Alabama. My legs now look like I have measles. No ointment would work, we tried salves, sprays, lotions and voodoo. Nothing worked.
There was plenty of water in the creek and the trip to Cirlcestone with Arizonaheat, Jmzblond, Messami and myself turned out to be less than excitng for a few tired of heat and bugs.
I saw two rattlesnakes on my way out on Sunday, a baby diamondback and a medium sized blacktail so be careful out there. I enjoyed myself despite the hardships and I won't be back soon enough.
Pictures soon.

Wow. Nice pix and reports folks. Looks like I missed another goodun'. It's good to see how green and verdant the ranch area looks. Hopefully that'll insulate it a little from possible fires this summer. Too bad about the bugs tho, I had a similar experience on Secret Mountain one May as well. Anything with DEET in it seems to work well for me. I have some jungle juice from REI that is 100% DEET that works great, but keep in mind DEET isn't harmless and some folks have a bad reaction to the stuff.

Here's what Messami and I found when we rolled into camp at 10:30 Friday night.

Notice the boots on the wrong feet.
I think it might make a good logo for the site, or at least a new avatar for Hooli.
