Cabin Loop Backpack
Fri-Sun May 9, 10 & 11
Leader: Kurt Sedler (mail@friendshiking.com)
Phone: 602-339-8780
Length: 17 mile loop (also a 25 mi. loop is possible)
Rating: Moderate -
Meeting place & time - T.B.D.
Please contact Kurt if you would like to participate.
This terrific loop backpack will take us into and through the tall pines, aspens and fern glens of the Mogollon Rim area. It is a moderate overnight backpack. There will be water at various places on the trail, lightening our load. This hike follows the original trails constructed by both the forest service and local ranchers in this area. These trails linked the network of cabins used by the original forest rangers in the early 1900s.
The plan is to depart the Valley sometime on Friday, camp near the trailhead Friday night (or maybe backpack in a short distance - we'll get a consensus), and start the trip in earnest on Saturday morning.

O'Leary Peak Hike Saturday, May 17
Leader: Mike Harren (mharren@hotmail.com)
Length: 8 miles
Phone: (602) 242-0827
Rating: Moderate
MEET at the Denny's pkg. Lot at I-17 and Bell Road at 7:00 A.M. Sharp
Escape the summer valley inferno and join us for a cool day in the pines near Flagstaff! O'Leary Peak is the only cinder cone near Sunset Crater that is legal to climb! On the way to the peak, we will be hiking on an abandoned road past the Bonito lava flow through mixed conifer vegetation. We may observe deer, elk, and/or hawks. Weather permitting, the summit of this 8,965-foot lava-dome volcano provides outstanding views into Sunset Crater. The summit provides astounding late-afternoon view of the colors of Sunset Crater and the Painted Desert beyond. Be sure to bring ample food and water. Also, pack accordingly for variable weather conditions. Please respect cultural artifacts--take only pictures, leave only footprints

MEET in Denny's pkg. lot, SWC Bell Road and I-17, 7:00 AM Sharp
Pristine woods at high elevation create a beautiful environment with a cool climate. Mt. Elden-Dry Lake Hills Trail System just north of Flagstaff is in the thickly forested foothills below Mt. Elden. Rocky Ridge Trail, starting at 7300', combines with Brookbank Trail to enter a beautiful meadow at over 8500 feet. After the meadow the trail joins with Sunset trail making a 500 foot dip in terrain, and then back up to The Catwalk Trail which climbs to 9000 feet only to descend down the Upper Oldham Trail on switchbacks back to the Rocky Ridge Trail. Bring water for the entire trip. Be prepared. It could be windy or rainy.
After hiking let's entertain a special treat at a Flagstaff downtown café/pub. I know a good one with great healthy food! _________________ "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
