I have only seen scorpions in the wild a few times, but cleaning a closet Monday night in anticipation of new carpet, I reached down to pick up a sack, and it bite back. No life altering effects, tingling, metal taste in the mouth, later on some slight twitching in my eyes, which kept me awake all night, and bite site pain. Tingling lasted mabye 36 hours, finger is still numb but coming back.
Sorry if this disturbs anyone, but I've seen them everywhere in AZ! They live most everywhere like spiders (I've been researching Black Widows recently because I didn't think they were prevalent in AZ), and they like tight places in between things.

Once, I got into bed in Tucson and felt something scurrying down my leg! Oops, but no problem. They like close, contained, places like sheets, boots, socks, etc. Another time my son was getting into the bathtub, after filling the tub. Well one was in the tub (I think they try to get a drink out of the drain), evidentally it floated to his foot and stung him. He had typical neurological problems in his foot and leg.

Anyway, the interesting thing is if their neurological venoms can cause us problems, they must be the bomb for their typical prey!

Thankfully, though they are everywhere that we backpack, they run and hide Smile

Obtain a battery powered black light and hunt for them as they glow.

Sorry Sean to hear about your experience. I only saw one live one in Goldfield once. Thought it was a lizard until I saw the tail go up/down. Then I got a little closer for a look but realized that wasn't probably a good move. Only had my tevas on. Backed away. Those little things move really fast. I didn't know that, but I do now.. Hope yur hand and ankle feel better soon.

Glad to hear that you don't suffer from any lasting bite effects, Shawn. I've seen 'em once in a while on trips but thankfully never been bit by one.

Oddly, the most common spot for me to find one is in the water meter connection box at the curb in front of the house. I'll see one in there about half the times I open the lid and look.

Surprised Since I read meters for Mesa this is totally correct, and I have had many sightings, saw a HUGE one last month, in fact it almost looked like a fake rubber toy, was about 6 inches long, looked like a small lobster, I kid you not Laughing

Sande, can you "collect" any of the big ones? I see them made into paperweights and other doodads.

I think a shot of strong pesticide would be in order for the buggers.

I've seen a couple live ones here in Az. Saw several in one day outside of Safford at an ancient field complex a couple years back, one up here recently, and then our friend from Marble Canyon brought us a dead one that was one of those "mini lobster" ones. Huge!

I hadn't been in AZ for a year when I was on a back road near Safford. I knew Toto and I weren't in Kansas (DC) any more when I could see the trantula's in the headlights on the road.
