I enjoyed the Peralta/Cave loop Friday with Desertfish. It was her first time in the Supes and our first hike together - but hopefully not our last. Mr. Green
After negotiating a minor cow traffic jam, I arrived at the TH around 8:30; Amy arrived a little later, and we hit the trail around 9:00. The conditions on the Peralta Trail were very pleasant - it wasn't crowded and there were still pools and even some running water. I love seeing the area like that!
We reached Fremont Saddle fairly quickly and took a nice rest before being compelled to get moving by the cold wind. We then made our way out to the Overlook before hooking up with the Cave Trail. There was a pretty nice wildflower display in the area around the beginning of the C.T., and blooming hedgehog cactuses along much of the trails.
We took another break at Geronimo Cave and enjoyed watching a small bird coming and going from a crack in the roof right above us, busily building a nest in there. We also saw many soaring hawks, the ever-present ravens, and one roadrunner with a lizard hanging out of its mouth.
Next, we took an adventerous route down the Devil's Slide, then when we got to the Fortress I could barely keep Desertfish from scaling the rock climbs like Spiderwoman! Wink
From there it was a nice stroll back to the TH. On the drive out, I was surprised to find those same silly cows still milling about on both sides of the road and actually standing right in the road, causing a four car bottleneck. We were also treated to some trick flying by a nearby plane doing loops and dives - did you notice that, Amy?
