yep headed out right now to who knows where in the Supes, but it will be off trail. Did Haunted Canyon at 27 snow on ground, Reavis a couple weeks ago was 27 with heavy frost. I don't mind hiking in cool weather, being from CO. I wouldn't call it cold I used to sweat at 40, but after living here for several years now, I freeze at 70 like everyone else
Gotta go. |

Oh yeah, definity. I'd have to say that 60% of my hiking throughout the year will probably end up being somewhere in the 40s. Did a hike a couple weeks ago out here and it was 7.9 degrees out on my digital temp read out. I can take a lot, but I have to admit, hiking in that temperature was even starting to get a little cold for me. Anyone else hike when it's below 10? Now that's hardcore. _________________ "IRONMAN" cometh, hiketh, destroyeth |

I preffer to hike in the cold over hiking in the heat. As long as I am dressed for it with a goodly amount of layers - then give me cold any day. I get enough of heat during the summer. I want COLD. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

Exactly. You are able to add tons of layers of clothing when it's cold if necessary; and even that, you usualy take some off cause you're going to be sweating some while you're hiking. Hiking in the heat on the other hand, you can only take off oh so much layers of clothing; the furthest you could go is being naked, and i'm not one to hike that way. So in any case, i'll stick to hiking in the cold! _________________ "IRONMAN" cometh, hiketh, destroyeth |

I thought there have been studies that have shown that cold weather exercise is harder in many ways than hot temp's?
Anyone recall the specifics? ie. you burn more calories |

There was an absolutely hysterical show that used to run on the public access cable channel (heck it might still be running for all I know) called "Naked Arizona"
It was basically this dude who would talk to the camera about where he was going to go hiking, then set up the camera and film himself walking away from the camera with some grand scenic view of the landscape stretching out before him - all dude was wearing was a pair of boots.
I caught it by accident one night and I couldn't belive what I was seeing - it was so corny and lame, but yet it was so darned funny that someone would actually do it. Strange. I only saw it a couple of times - but it is seared in my memory.
Anyone else remember that show? _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

I've done a number of hikes when it was cold. It's kinda hard not to since i grew up in FLagstaff. I have hiked in the snow and in the fog. Fog is neat to hike in. December of 2000 I hiked out of the Grand Canyon in my shorts. It was cold and windy. I have not hiked in the cold in a long time. _________________ Mountains are there to be climbed!

We quit cold weather hiking for several years but took it up again this winter. I think the hardest part is the long nights. We solved this by reading out loud to each other. We also had a lot of warm clothing so we could sit outside for a couple of hours after the sun went down--had a full moon. _________________ Shikekeh hozhoogo naasha.

This topic made me laugh...back east, it's not an option to not hike in the cold if you hike regularly.
Heading out into inclement weather adds a whole new element to the outdoor experience...hiking when it's nice (traditional AZ weather) is "easy"...head out into snow, rain, heat...and it's a different world! _________________ -Colin

I have to agree with you ck1, it is a different world when you are out in the different elements it is a different world.
Up in Flagstaff it's not an option either if you want to do hiking regularly. there is about 100 days of nice weather, then it's all about hiking in the cold, unless your talking about Flagstaffs last few winters. I really liked hiking in the snow. _________________ Mountains are there to be climbed!

You burn a few more calories, because when it's cold you are trying to keep your core at a certain temperature. Usually you need more water too. I don't really notice the difference until I stop, I guess you need to add layers before you stop. The science is pretty basic. You work a little harder when you are exercising, and trying to stay warm. I feel fairly hungry whether it is cold or not, from the exercising alone. _________________ Your life is dyed the color of your imagination |
