A Phoenix woman accused of leaving her children alone with a mountain lion and seven other wild animals was arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse and endangerment, authorities said Friday.

Michelle Gierke, who didn't have a state-issued permit for the wild cats, occasionally left her 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son unsupervised with the animals, investigators said. Arizona Game and Fish officers began investigating after receiving an anonymous tip last month, spokeswoman Julie Hammonds said.

"While the officer was speaking with the children, she noticed there was a bobcat kitten in the house standing near the window, uncaged," Hammonds said.

Gierke, 32, admitted keeping a mountain lion, two bobcats and five African servals at her home, near Seventh Street and Dunlap Avenue, investigators said.

A serval is a spotted cat that resembles a cheetah.

Gierke remains in a Maricopa County jail in lieu of $2,700 bond and was ordered to appear at a preliminary court hearing on Dec. 23. A judge has prohibited Gierke from possessing wild animals until the case is resolved, according to court documents.

The animals have been turned over to a wildlife rehabilitation center, Hammonds said.
