2 baby condors take first flights in northern Arizona
Nov. 30, 2004 12:00 AM
One small flight for condors, one big leap for endangered critters.
Two baby condors in northern Arizona took their first flights last week, marking another milestone in the return of this species from the brink of extinction.
This is the second year in a row in which chicks born in the wild have successfully flown from their cliff-edge nests, and brings to four the number of California condor chicks that have been born and taken flight in the wild.
On Thanksgiving, a chick at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon flew nearly a quarter-mile, said Jeff Humphrey, outreach specialist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Last Tuesday, another chick took its inaugural flight from its nest cave in the Vermilion Cliffs.
"It's recovery. It happens one step at a time," Humphrey said.
