Has anyone seen a crested saguaro out there in the wild? According to an article in Az Hiways magazine, they are pretty rare ( about 1 in 300,000 ) and no one really knows what causes it.
Contrary to popular opinion, it insnt caused by a lightning strike.
Here is a pic:

I've seen at least one out in the Supes - can't remember exactly where, though. Maybe AzHeat knows? |

And yet the desert botanical gardens and the Phoenix zoo both have quite a few on display. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

If you look in the gallery I am sure you will find a picture of one in either Tom's or Mike's pictures. Let me go look...
Canyon Lake to Peralta by GTG and one by SRLatty both have one in their albums and there is one in the Skull mesa album by Mike I believe.... _________________ ~~~Diane~~~

That one out at Sevens Springs is pretty well known.
The photo from the Skull Mesa trip was taken by Tom. It was in a little wash near the junction of the Cottonwood and Skull Mesa Trails. You can see it here.
There's another taken on the infamous Hackberry/Black Mesa/Dead Woman's Cave Hike, by that alien hunter guy... here.
Tom and I saw a really nice example of a crowned saguaro next to the Ballantine Trail. Tom's photo is here. _________________ [/size] |

That's one of the best ones I've seen GB. I have a photo of one somewhere but it is nowhere as dramatic as that one. I also have a photo of a "Wavy" sahuaro, one that is very wavy from top to bottom. It is buried in thousands of images though. _________________ Seize from every moment its unique novelty and do not prepare your joys

Thanks Glen! I know what you mean trying to keep them all organized is a chore.

There's another one just about even with Aylor's arch out in East Boulder Canyon. There should be more than one pic of that one in the gallery. |
