This would be business as usual around here, but in South Carolina, where I'm from, coyotes are newcomers in recent years. This story is from my hometown.

Coyotes Suspected In Disappearance Of Paris Mountain Pets

Pets in a Paris Mountain neighborhood are disappearing, and the eerie sounds erupting from the woods during the night may hold the clue to solving the mystery.

Coyotes are lurking in the woods, and have already claimed two cats within the past couple of days.

Owner Dr. Don Gregg said he knows coyotes snatched the two cats, even though he hasn't seen them.

Chip Lawton caught a glimpse of the stealth-like predator and says he is also missing two cats.

"I've got one cat left and he's pretty paranoid," Lawton said.

Coyotes are opportunistic according to Lee Sims from the Greenville Zoo.

"They come up in the yard when the people are gone, and the pets are there, so it's a meal," Sims said.

Sims said coyotes have very few predators.

"Unless you are talking about the dogs barking at them," Sims said. "Sometimes they eat the competition -- literally."

Neighbors are putting up signs warning others to protect their pets so they don't turn into an easy meal, too.

Coyotes look similar to a small shepherd-type dog, but they have a bushy tail. Their coat is a grayish brown but can take on red and black hues.

The Department of Natural Resources said coyotes are in every county in South Carolina.
