I have done Humphreys in winter. usually not much snow above timberline, even in good snow years. Depending on snow conditions, may need snowshoes, and / or instep crampons. Suggest you do a lower peak, as Kendricks, for experience. |

I have done Humphreys in May when there was still quite a bit of snow on the trail. It was deffinatly a different experience. It made the hike quite more difficult. Most of the snow was i the shade in the forested sections, none above treeline. _________________ Mountains are there to be climbed!

Well, we almost made it to the top last summer. We turned back because it was getting dark and we had no light. I know great planning there. |

I made my 1st snow ascent of Humphreys Peak in mid-Dec 2002.
Insteps were very helpful and suspect snowshoes required if Snowbowl is open. In fact, a friend used snowshoes on Humphreys after last big storm around XMAS.
Alot different than summer ascents--amazing how much more energy it takes to hike through snow and in freezing temps. (altitude+) |
