Dog Help

I know a lot of you have pets & I was wonmdering if I could get som pointers....

I took in a Wemiraner mid-July -- He just showed up at my door & no one claimed him, No chips or collar...I just had to keep him

He is very very attached...which is great but he is in my bed every night & eventually manages to get me off the bed! He will not sleep on the floor (He has a really comfy bed & I am OK with him sleeping in the room -- Prefer him sleep in his area in the hallway right outside the bedroom).

If you leave him outside (the room), he barks for hours

He is dealing with seperation ideas for sure...we picked Buffett (our dog) at the pound, and it took her a long time to understand that when we left, we would be returning...I'd say consistency is what I've found to be most effective in training or retraining dogs...it's tough, but consistently kicking him off the bed...

We got lucky with Buffett...she minds well..

Severl approaches you can take, in the order I'd try them:
1. Just keep pushing him off the bed as soon as he gets on it, and I mean IMMEDIATELY; make take quite a while, but should work eventually. But....you CANNOT EVER let him stay on the bed. You'll have to keep the bedroom door shut whenever you're not there to keep him off, because if he's allowed on it during the day he'll clearly think it's OK at night too.

2. Put his bed, with some toys and something to chew on, in the hallway, shut the door and let him bark. If you can stand it and you don't have neighbors to worry about this will eventually work. But you can't give in, not even once.

3. Buy one of those collars that delivers a slight shock each time he barks. I don't like these things, but sometimes as a last resort they're necessary


Problem is, once a dog is allowed to do something, even just once, it'll think it's OK to do it all the time. And it just takes one lapse on your part and you're back to square one, so you have to be totally consistent.

Thanks for the advice... I guess I will just have to get really good earplus!

My dog - Silver never gets on the bed if I am not there...even when he wanders around the house & is not being watched. I have had some success in pushing him off the bed...last night it was 3:00 am before he snuck up on me -- I was too tired to catch him in the act. I guess I am paying the price of having him watched "once" by some one who let him on the bed

I guess persistence pays -- I am hoping at least.
