PRESCOTT - Bark beetle activity in the Prescott area is declining, according to forest officials.

The University of Arizona Extension Service gave an update about the state's beetle activity Friday during the Arizona Community Tree Council's annual conference.

The bark beetle epidemic that took off in 2002 killed 20 million ponderosa pines and 50 million pinon trees in Arizona and New Mexico by 2003, said Tom DeGomez, forest health specialist for the University of Arizona Extension Service.

If someone had asked the experts before 2002 if that could happen, they would have replied, "It'll never happen," DeGomez said.

Judging by beetle traps in the forest right now, the population may be lower than in 2002, DeGomez said.

"We may see a little less (tree) mortality this year than last," he said.

But if the area gets below-normal summer monsoons, the mortality could pick up again, said Jeff Schalau, Yavapai County Extension Office director.

"You never know what the little guys are going to do," he said.

Could it be that there are fewer bark beetles because there are fewer trees for them to feed upon??? There are some pretty dead areas around here...
