Tons, on the Cave Creek Trail, Picketpost, Havasupai, Ridgeline... in other words wherever I go. But I will admit I rather see them than snakes.

I saw tons of ants on Boulder Canyon last Tuesday and on Weaver's Needle Loop the Tuesday before that.

On Picket Post, you can sometimes hike with an unbroken line from the TH to the summit (don't sit down or break your leg; you won't have to worry about having enough water... :)) ).
The amazing thing is that the various hives all co-mingle in the line on the TH! They're all cousins (and sort-of the same gender :)) ) so I guess that's the reason they accept each other.
That is probably the same case on other parts of the mountain that are off-trail to us (but not to the ants...). However, because the ants from unrelated hives that hike the mt on the various routes are probably unrelated, they probably do meet and compete for the territory (ants are a lot different from people, of course...). But hey, a hiker's a hiker, and I'll share their trail with THEM! :)) . |

Came back an hour ago from Hieroglyphic Springs. Don't expect to observe any while night hiking. but this time of year I will come home and find that I have been invaded. Also been hiking in the morning after sun up yo noon and have not observed any. Road biked along the river last week and explored the mesquite bosques and did not observe any. Did not see any snakes around the trees but saw four rattlesnakes and alarge gopher snake while riding. |
