2 arrested at Sabino Canyon as lion search begins

Associated Press
Mar. 24, 2004 07:05 PM

TUCSON - Two people were arrested Wednesday in Sabino Canyon and face trespassing charges for allegedly interfering with an official search for mountain lions that are considered a threat to humans, authorities said.

Rodney Coronado, 38, of Tucson and John Richardson, 49, of Katonah, N.Y., were arrested at around 1:30 p.m., according to the U.S. Forest Service.

A third person apparently evaded capture. The canyon has been closed to the public since March 10 because of safety concerns.

Coronado and Richardson were being booked on three misdemeanor charges, including trespass on national forest system lands, violation of the special closure order and interfering with Forest Service volunteers or employees while in the course of official duties.

The Tucson Citizen reported on their Web site that three people dressed in camouflage were spotted attempting to disable a snare trap set for the mountain lions.

Gerry Perry, regional supervisor for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, which is conducting the search, said people involved in the search used binoculars to detect people on a ridge above them.

A helicopter pilot at the canyon to help with the trapping efforts flew overhead to make certain that the people above did not have weapons and may have helped in locating those apprehended.

The private helicopter is under contract with Game and Fish to transport any animals that are trapped and tranquilized.

Snare traps were set in the canyon Tuesday, and a federal tracker with dogs, accompanied by a Game and Fish biologist who will tranquilize any cats caught, began searching for up to four mountain lions Wednesday.

The search was called off by mid-afternoon because low humidity made it difficult for the dogs to get a scent, Perry said.

He said they are concerned about a number of threats they have been receiving from those opposed to the hunt. He declined to describe the threats, saying "they are evidentiary and have been turned over to law enforcement agencies."

Just when you think you've seen all the idiot manuevers, there's another to add.

I cant believe people still call them "lions" when they are plainly related to Jaguars. But then again we still call 'em "Indians" dont we....

Found this on mountain lion names.

"The puma has the largest range of any cat species in the New World, with at least 30 subspecies described, extending from the southern tip of South America to the southern part of Canada. The cat has been known by many names including cougar, puma, deer tiger, Mexican lion, mountain screamer, brown tiger, catamount, silver lion, mountain demon, Indian devil, purple feather, king cat, sneak cat, mountain lion and panther."

Personally, I like "mountain demon" or "king cat".

Great post! I wasn't aware of all the different names!
I wonder where the "purple feather" name came from???
Interesting.
