I know we talked about this at the not to be named website, but that info is not accessible...I'm looking for suggestions for headlamps...mine's finished. I'd be using it around the campsite, night hiking, and for early morning runs... _________________ -Colin

I like the Petzl Tikka for a headlamp.
I also owm some little Photon lights and the other super expensive one found at Frys Electronics, forget the brand. It's about 5 in long, five lamps, 2 3 volt camera cells.
I like them all for specific purposes.

I've got a Black Diamond product called the Ion (I think). It's tiny, very light, and very un-complicated. 2 LED bulbs don't give off the greatest of light but I can see what I need to. It uses some little camera size battery that was easy to find. I tend to carry it in my hand instead of wearing it. I don't like the character of the light when it is up high like that.

I love my Petzl Tikka - especially loved it when I really needed it during the Bull Basin fiasco!! |

I use a Petzel Tikka and it has worked out great for me on all my extended hikes. The LED lights make the battery last quite a while. On another note -- LED lights blind you much worse than incandesent type lights.
Tried the Petzel Zippka - did not like it at all. It just did not stay on ... _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

I went into REI to buy a Petzl something or other, and the sales woman talked me into a Black Diamond. Four LED bulbs, three AAA batteries. No complaints. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

I'll stick with the herd here, I have a Tikka and love it, it was very key during the 3 1/2 hours of night hiking I did in Saguaro NP earlier this month. Thanks guys...I was considering the Petzl Tikka, and the other one, with the retractable string, but leaning toward the tikka...will look at the Black Diamonds...I like their products as a whole...

I've had mine two years now, and have used it a good amount, even around the house when looking deep into my storage closet that has no light _________________ "In the first place you can't see anything from a car; you've got to get out of the goddamned contraption and walk, better yet crawl, on hands and knees...When traces of blood begin to mark your trail you'll see something, maybe."

I've had it a little over a year. I use it more at home than on the trail. |

I have a Petzl but I don't know exactly which one. There aren't any other marking on it. It's on the 5th big ole battery. Bought in 1997. Still works like a charm. I use it more working on my motorcycles than in caves.... Oh, I find the replacement batteries at Batteries Plus...don't remember what they cost but that's a good sign cuz I can be pretty aaaah frugal. Hope that helps you, Colin. _________________ All our dreams come true if we have the courage to pursue them...Walt Disney |

I have a Black Diamond. Bought it a year ago. It has seen about 20-30 hours of use and it's still very bright. I bought a Petzl for my son for Christmas. I was impressed with the different brightness settings. Should be able to get more life from a set of batteries. I also carry mine in my hand. When you wear it one your head you can't see the shadows so it affects depth perception on the trail. |

I am not sure if it is Petzel or Blcak Diamond that has a new style light that has two light sources. One is LED lights for up close and the other is a bulb type light source for distance. |

Thanks everyone!
I talked with the big haired kid at REI tempe, he recommended the Tikka...I asked about the Black Diamond one, which is called something that I can't remember, but it has the 4 bulbs in a row...he said it was also good, but offered the suggestion that if you are going to by one with a battery pack on back, why not just get the brighter Petzl...that made sense to me...but I didn't buy anything yet...thus my excuse not to run in the am
Seriously though, thanks everyone...I think I'm getting the Tikka... _________________ -Colin

Just another note:
If you use a red filter on the light -- you do not get blinded at night when the light (some one else's ) shines right into you eyes! I guess red light does not affect the way the retina adjusts to natural night vision. _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries
