Bill, I use a pair of Leki's on all of my hikes. Sometimes I collapse them and go a ways without them but mostly they are in use.

Glen, along with the other good suggestions, do wall squats everyday. Back flat against the wall, thighs parallel to the ground and calfs parallel to the wall. Hold for 60 seconds. Repeat. Repeat. Work up to five minutes over a six month time frame. A must do. Jim.
P.S. no full sprinter stretches of the quads at all.
