Has anyone here done a Young to Payson hike (or vice versa)? This is a 22-mile walk through rugged country without trail. The direct route takes one over (around in my case) the Diamond Butte which is about 1,000 feet higher than the surrounding hills. BTW Google does not have one image of Diamond Butte; it must be really remote country.
May I sneak a second question in? Can anybody here recommend an outfitter who can set city-me up for the hike? I would do it in three days in winter, and I need specific advice on pack, food, bedroll, water, navigation.
Thanks! |

The old 'Mail Trail' goes from Young to Gisela, which is south of Payson.
The Hell's Gate trail will get you from just north of Young, down through Tonto/Haigler creeks and up the other side - exiting in Green Valley, about 11 miles east of Payson.
It is not so much 'remote' as it is rugged. Sounds like a fun trip! _________________ "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
