Came back from camping the other day and while putting away my camper I found a rattlesnake on the back patio. After placing in bucket for relocation, found another one coming down the street. Also observed a Gila monster the day I left when I did a morning bike ride. |

I saw 3 Gila Monsters in April. 1 in Sabino Canyon, 1 in SNP East, and 1 in Del Salto Canyon. Last night, I swerved to miss a baby rattler crossing the road near River Road. The cool thing about the Gila Monster at Del Salto Canyon was that fact that it had it's front feet in a pool of water and was lapping up the water with it's big red tongue. _________________ Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. - Rachel Carson |

This isn't a rattlesnake, but I felt compelled to sneak this in here. I thought you might enjoy these shots.
This is a copperhead my wife found when we were rock climbing in PA this past weekend. It took a little while to get him to cooperate, but after a few pics we left him alone. Actually, my wife left him alone the whole time. Only I am stupid enough to get close to poisonous snakes.
In the next shot, I thought he might be getting ready to strike, so this was the last pic I took.
Sorry about the noise. It's dark in the woods. These were shot at ISO 800. _________________ "Your day-glo ballet days are over." Ancient chinese proverb.

Yikes! I wonder if they have a good antivenin for copperheads, Matt! I hear they are super-poisonous? |

Matt, crazy good shots of that snake! Hope you were using a loooonngg telephoto! And the noise is overwhelmed by the subject!
But now I'm going to suck the wind out of this thread! (but just a little).
And I'm surprised Elizabeth didn't jump all over this, too...

Yeah, they are very poisonous. I'm sure they have anti-venom. PA is full of copperheads. |
Any animal that injects a toxin into your body is venomous.
If you touch or ingest a toxin from a plant or animal and it makes you sick, then it is poisonous.
Salamanders and toads are poisonous. Copperheads aren't poisonous, in fact they are quite tasty But they are deadly venomous |

I have a friend that was bitten by a baby copperhead. Caught her on a finger. She nearly died. Spent 2 weeks in the hospital burn unit where they did reconstructive surgery to repair some of the damage to 2 fingers. The venom liquefies the tissue that it contacts. The little ones don't hold anything back. They dump it all into their victim. |
