oh, I wish I could go. I just don't think my knee is ready to hit the trail.....5 more weeks for me. The rain and the clouds will make it more beautiful, I'm sure. Think of the great photo ops!
Have fun! |

Run between the raindrops?
A tarp would help, depending upon how windy it gets. I personally haven't been there yet, so I can't tell you if there are any alcoves or overhangs in which to seek shelter. The general area, however, has many such alcoves.
If I ever get a Park person on the phone (still not answering!), I'll ask the question, but I doubt that an answer will be forthcoming.
There are a couple of folks on the site that have been there. Any advice or insight?? |
The wind, to varying degrees, is generally a companion on the Navajo reservation and that region at large.
On top - If you choose from sites in the front CG (nearest the visitor center) there are enough trees in most of the sites to rig a tarp - worst case, drape it over the picnic table. My memory of the rearward campground isn't the best, but I would venture that there are enough trees there as well.
At K.S.C.G. - there are no alcoves in/near the campsite - there are gobs of trees, however, and a tarp could be easily rigged. _________________ "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Some trees for tarps at any of the car campsites (both group and regular) that I've camped in. NO alcoves that are legal to camp in anywhere around there.
Not too much walking in the creek if you follow the trail, but several crossings of the creek. Trail is VERY sandy in places, though, but so is the creek.
Water is said to also have heavy metals in it. Not advisable to drink. Park service CHECKED OUR GEAR to see that we had two gallons apiece. I am not sure they still do that, though. |

I was able to get a live person on the phone today at Navajo National Monument. She knew that I had confirmed the reservation for the permit, so I think that we're good to go. Rain is very likely. Scattered thunderstorms. Low 50s at night. Low to mid 60s during the day. Pretty good weather for hiking. My only concern is the creek swelling due to recent rains.
I'll see you all Friday night. Travel safely.

Good luck, and wish we could be there. I'll be working until next Thursday straight, though. _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |

One more small tip....
If you go to the Keet Seel campground and drop your gear before your tour of the ruin, remember to take a snack & water, etc. over to the ruin -sometimes the ranger/tour guide is out on a tour & you may wait 40 min. + for your turn. You will need to cross the creek to get from the camp over to the ruin so save the dry socks for later. _________________ "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Rob, what's going on in your area with the weather? I'm seeing flashing near antelope. I have friends attempting the Salt Trail Canyon today to the LCRG...wondering how they will do? |
