Ft Apache is at White River. Nothing much else out there.

Oh, duh.

But, you know, the entire reservation used to be called Ft. Apache and there are still a few signs up along the highways calling it that. Did you also check out Kinishba ruin? I have been to Ft. Apache, but not to the ruin. (I have tried to avoid Whiteriver. You hear too many stories. I have been through there, stopped at the grocery store, gotten the evil eye, etc. Up at the ski area, though, the tribal members always seem friendly.)

The tribe loses many young people every year, to suicide, alcohol poisoning, car wrecks and murder. In our local paper it is very common to see their obitiuaries, almost every issue of the twice-weekly paper will have one or two. It is sad. If you talk to people from there some will tell you they have lost 8 or 10 family members in the past couple of years. They have all the advantages offered them through the schools and govt programs, but their society is a mess due to rampant alcoholism, incest and other nasties. Not sure how to help them. Some AA people I knew were going down there every week to try to help, and also used to invite them to off-rez meetings.
