Many of us have posted of great times in southeastern Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains. Hayes' surprisingly well-written history of the area will make you feel like a lifetime resident. Beginning with an almost Michener-esque summary of the area’s geology and prehistory, he recounts the local history up to the early 1940’s when he arrived. Detailed history of Fort Bowie-the first and the last one, the Indian Wars, the early settlers, the mining industry, ranching and farming, the advent of the Forest Preserve and later US Forest Service, are all included.
This was one of my first local Arizona histories and hooked me on them. It adds so much to a hiking trip to know the history; the detail in this book will make you more informed than most of the locals. It would help to have a good map of the area handy, such as Topo Illustrated on the computer, as you read this because the book is rife with references to local landmarks.
I picked up my copy at the store in Portal. |
