PLAN B GHOTM, June 28 to June 30

Tracy and I tried to pre-hike to Philomena Spring yesterday (Saturday). There is a “trail” of sorts, but we lost it in the snow at about 10,500 feet elevation. Not having pre-hiked it, and not being 100% sure that the trail we were on does indeed take us to Philomena Spring, we don’t think it wise to try to do this hike.

We propose for Plan B hiking AZT Passage 34, from the Snowbowl parking lot, down the Aspen Loop trail to the AZT, then north 6.8 miles to FR 418. Options to extend the hike include a ~2 mile side trip up the meadow for some incredible views (and lung exercise), a short side trip to the beach at Bismarck Lake, or hiking an additional 3.5 miles north to Kelly Tank/FR 514.

There are nice camping spots very near the AZT/418 junction.

Directions: North on highway 180 to mile marker 235, (10 miles past our usual turn to Hart Prairie Preserve) then right 2 miles on FR 151 (this is the north end of the road past Hart Prairie). At the junction, stay left onto FR 418 for ~1.2 miles, past the AZT crossing, to a small side road on the left (N 35.38461, W 111.71499). Turn left and drive into the camp spot.

The "bring your own food" plan worked well at Grandview Tower, so unless someone wants to organize something differently, let's plan on that. I will, however, have pancakes for the group Saturday morning.

Then we’ll squeeze into as few vehicles as possible and head up to Snowbowl parking lot and start hiking.

What a great day on the trail! The scenery, the beauty, the temperatures, the bits of rain and claps of thunder and of course the company. Great day everyone! Thx to Shawn & Tracy for setting up a great plan B (and thank goodness) and thx for shuttling to Shawn and Michelle.

Here is Video 1 of 3 from our wonderful hike: http://youtu.be/wxFChuEMNKs

I'll try and get the videos done before I leave but I don't know if I'll get the photos done in time.

Happy Trails,
Angela

What a wonderful weekend away from the HEAT!!!!

Thanks Shawn & Tracy for setting up this nice getaway. Something I needed just about now.
The Hike was so nice and we only had 180 mi to UT... Ha Ha
Now I can say I've hiked part of the AZT. I'll have to look to doing some of the other parts.
Beautiful scenery the whole way. Especially liked the While Aspen trunks surrounded by massive clusters of ferns and some pretty flowers, but the whole hike was very scenic.

Enjoyed great company and seeing all again. Great time!! Haven't taken time to view the movie clip yet, will do shortly. Bet it is as good as all those previously.

Thanks Shawn for the yummy pancake breakfast, something I don't often make for myself. So light and fluffy.... YUM!

Blister was bigger than I expected across the ball of my foot right below my toes... Crying or Very sad rather painful, but soaked it today when I got home and seems to be going down already Yes

Those boots are Out the Door Rant Used to be so comfy and never a blister, but not now !! Will be checking out some new ones

Thanks Shawn & Tracy for the wonderful Plan B Applause -- what a beautiful section of AZT to hike on and we got to hike on a little piece of trail that Shawn helped build . How cool is that! This will be a great fall hike as well -- the trail winds through mean aspen groves and has long views out over the meadows and cones that dot the area.

Thanks Angela for driving & Linda for the great company on the ride up to Flagstaff. It was great hiking with all of you.

The camp location picked out by Shawn & Tracy is a great one. I think we will visiting that one again.
