CAVE CREEK - The Spur Cross Conservation Area, one of the Valley's most prized natural wonders, will open its gates a little wider on Jan. 1.

Hikers and equestrians are being given additional access to several designated trails, some extending to the Tonto National Forest. This is tantamount to Spur Cross reopening after a couple of years while Maricopa County retooled the 2,154-acre property in accordance with a master plan that eliminates motorized access.

While jeep-tour operators protested, Spur Cross Conservation Area Supervisor John Gunn said the move was necessary to preserve the fragile ecological balance. And, Gunn said, it was dangerous to mix horses, hikers and jeeps on the same narrow trails.

The jeep operators disagreed and felt they had been unfairly targeted since many had been instrumental in helping preserve Spur Cross.

Three years ago, Spur Cross nearly became another golf course.

Following a 15-year grass-roots battle to save it from developers, the property was rescued by Arizona State Parks, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation and Cave Creek for $21 million.

Entrance fee is $3 per person; free for Cave Creek residents with a Spur Cross Conservation Area pass, which is available at the Cave Creek Town Hall.

For general information or information on guided hikes, phone Ranger Jennifer Johnston at (480) 488-6623. You also can click on the events link at www.maricopa.gov/parks/spur_cross.
