I've been using Backcountry Navigator as a backup GPS/GPX map for hiking over the past year or two. Though not perfect, the software was adequate and saved printing paper maps for each hike. Unfortunately, it seems that the software no longer is able to import MyTopo maps for use on my Smartphone and it doesn't appear that Backcountry will be able to negotiate a deal with Trimble (recent purchasers of MyTopo). I've tried out the Trimble Outdoors Android app and it is far from user friendly. More like a "work in progress" and not yet ready for prime time. Unlike Backcountry, it appears that you must use a PC to create a trip, but since the Help files are nearly non-existent, I am not certain this is the case. Generally, I can breeze through software and not need a manual, but this one is not intuitive. Nevertheless, does anyone have a recommendation for an Android app that works smoothly? Or a clue as how to best use the Trimble app? |

If you update your Backcountry Navigator software to V4.3, you then have an option to select a map source of "USA Topo Maps - ArcGIS. This announcement just came out this morning. I updated and selected the new source and it worked fine. I have not used it yet so I can't say if it's better, worse or the same as MyTopo. |
