I am considering a Paria Canyon Backpack again in Spring of 2012. Permits can be had in Dec for March....or so Dates are not fixed -- Just picked Mar 22

4-5 day trip @ about 40+ miles

What is the overall difficulty level of this hike?

It depends on where you begin your hike and the depth of the Paria River. If you leave from the White House trailhead and hike to Lee's Ferry, the difficulty level is moderate. The terrain is slightly down hill all the way but footing is often insecure due to sandy, muddy, and rocky surfaces. Leaving from Buckskin Gulch or Wire Pass makes the hike more difficult. Rocky drop-offs and obstacles exist in Buckskin Gulch and conditions can change with each rainfall. All hikers should be in good physical condition. The lack of a trail means you will spend a lot of time walking in water. Extremes in temperatures also impact hiking conditions.

You need to be OKed by trip leader before you are included in the permit. If you are new -- please contact me.

White House to Lee's Ferry: 38 miles (three to five days)
General thought is to come in at White House & have a layover day there so that you can hike up Buckskin if you want to ...
This allows for some to head back out tto White House if they choose to.
Rest can amble down to Lees Ferry

Wire Pass to Lee's Ferry: 43 miles (four to six days) (We have already done this one)
Buckskin Gulch to Lee's Ferry: 47 miles (four to seven days)

Ya'll should go for the Upper Paria. Sure not as spectacular but super easy hiking, still scenic and great side canyons and I think free permit if you even bother to get one, as not as bad car shuttle.
However, if the dirt road access gets wet---look out.
