I was fortunate enough to land a volunteer spot on a fish survey in the Grand Canyon conducted by Arizona Game and Fish. I was on the river for 12 days and you can read about it here:

Thanks- it was a fantastic time. That rattler was incredible! It also rattled for longer than I've ever heard, even after we were well away from it. Here's a short video of it that I didn't put in the blog: http://youtu.be/wZd5i-X1gWk

I'm leaving on my GC river rafting trip on Sunday! Woohoo!

I have been going to the gym and working out. I had no idea what triceps were before trying to row a raft in lower Grand Canyon back in May. Since I have been going to the gym several times a week, all summer long, you can actually see the difference. My scrawny arms are slightly less scrawny!

So, I hope to really learn to row on this trip, and will have 17 or 18 days to work on it, as much as I can, every day. Then back to the gym to stay fit for the Sept. 2012 river trip! Razz

As for hiking, one of the first big hikes planned is Saddle Canyon. We will also see Nautiloid, Matkatamiba, Havasu Creek, Elves Chasm, Deer Creek Narrows, etc., etc. It will be hot, but I guess I can deal with that.

I'm baaaack! A Youtube video of our spectacular flip in the Ledge Hole at Lava Falls is forthcoming, and photos, too, of course. I am now a member of the Colorado River Swim Team, and my first swim was into the maw of the biggest hole in the biggest rapid in the Canyon, when it was running at about 26,000 cfs. My surfing experience did me well, since I knew that once I eventually popped up, I would have a nanosecond to get a breath, and then would get slapped by the next wave. Then I swam Son of Lava, and then a commercial guide grabbed me and pulled me onto his boat. (Thanks Zack from WRA.)

Had a great time, although it is difficult to deal with 15 other random people for 17 days. Mostly a good experience with them. Great experience while on the river. I did a fair bit of rowing, but am still a newb. Rowed a lot of riffles and small rapids, and lots of flatwater.

We didn't do a lot of hiking due to the heat. Just a lot of short hikes up some of the canyons with waterfalls, which are too numerous too see them all on one trip. I did actually appreciate the fact that it was summer, since the nights were warm and the daylight is longer. Actually it never was super hot until the last few days. Not much rain, either.

Last night we did the night float below Diamond, to Pierce Ferry, under the moon. You just put the oars up and float. We made 60 miles yesterday.

That sounds pretty awesome! thumbs up ...well, it ALL sounds pretty awesome, but a night float seems like it'd be pretty special. Very Happy

Can't wait to see the pictures!

That video is on my facebook page right now, and I will also put it up on the HAZ facebook page. (Does AZH have a FB page?) Unless the guy who took the video will put it up on Youtube, I won't be able to put up a link to it.

The Lava Falls flip is now on the Arizona Hikers facebook page, and the HAZ FB page. Yes, there is an FB page for AZH! I have to buy a card reader to put the photos on my newer laptop, then I can post them on here.
