Here's the potential plan: Head up Thursday, April 21st after work, meet in either Cameron or farther north at Cedar Ridge, where we take off to the west on 20 - 25 miles of pretty good dirt roads to the trail head and camp there. There is only one place where some high clearance is needed, and it's only for 50 feet or so. Friday, hike down Shinumo Wash to the river, and explore the area. Saturday, head downstream on top of the Redwall bench, explore some old surveyor sites (and maybe some other 'interesting' stuff Wink ), head back to camp. Sunday, hike out, stop in Cameron or Flagstaff for dinner, and head home.

Permits are needed, but shouldn't be a problem to get. The last time I got a permit for that area, the guy in the back country office said 'Wow, that's the first time I've EVER given out a permit for that area!"....

I've already been out to the trail head a couple times (once at night, so I can find the way), and I've been down the 'trail' to the canyon bottom, and a mile or so downstream. It looks like a fun way to spend a long weekend...

I'm so torn...............

Got somethings moved around and rescheduled so now I've got a potential conflict. Looking at doing Waterholes Canyon that weekend with the 440 rap into Powell which has been on my list since I could crawl.

poking around on the internet to look up Shinumo Wash and found Silver Grotto Canyon.......what a beauty.

I hear it's an "easy" canyon.

and check this little trip video out Smile

Anyone want to hike Hermit to Dripping Springs with possibly hiking to rim at Dripping Springs and walking across rim to Waldron and down Waldron and back up Hermit? Either Sat. or Sun. this coming weekend? A long dayhike. I haven't decided on the day but will leave Flagstaff by 5 a.m.

Well, poop. Cottonwood Creek is full on the 22nd, as is South Canyon. Howsoever, I did have an idea! Hows about Shinumo Wash. This is a drainage that goes to the river just upstream from South Canyon, but comes in from the east, which means an hour or two less driving than South Canyon. I've been to the trail head a couple times, and even hiked a few miles down the route toward the river. It's an old, abandoned surveyors route that ends up on the redwall above the river. Downstream a quarter mile or so is access to the river. I've wanted to explore this area for quite a while, and I think we could have fun exploring this area too. There are definitely some interesting things to explore in the area.... Any interest in this?

hnak--are you talking day hike or over night?

I have been going with the take what you can method but lately it has been getting harder--I was up there a couple of weeks ago and everything was full on the south rim--ended up at Utah Flats again( which I love)

That was a dumb question--took me a minute to think about the area. My son went down there years ago--long but fun.
