I am considering a moderate 2 niter backpack into Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness on Dec 3 & Dec 4th & 5th Dec
Plan is to go in from West side (Easy Passenger Car accesible) hike in ~ 5 miles & basecamp for Fri/Sat ; explore further on Saturday & Hike back out on Sunday.
Group Size: Limited to 10 ( I have permits to enter on Friday & Exit on Sunday)
Permit Fees are: 5$ a day & we will share the costs of unused permits if I can't get them refunded. Confused Hopefully it does not come to this ....

TH Start Time: 10:30 am
Camp Location: 3 lons & fire ring campsite just across from Horse Camp Canyon. One of the tents will have arizonahiker.com tag ( Angel's tent!)
Directions to West Trailhead:
The access road is usually suitable for passenger cars year round.

From Phoenix (120 miles, 2 to 2.5 hours): Take US Highway 60 to Superior. At Superior, take State Highway 177 to Winkelman. At Winkelman, turn right / south onto State Highway 77, 11 miles to Aravaipa Road (at Central Arizona College). Turn left and go 12 miles to the West trailhead along a paved and graded dirt road. From the trailhead, it is a 1.5-mile hike through Nature Conservancy land to the west wilderness boundary.

I'm looking forward to this, I honestly can't remember when I last did a backpack. That is SAD.
I think I'm all packed. If I forgot something I guess I don't need it. Checked my list twice.

Sorry you guys won't be making this one. Hope Rocky gets better.

Oh, yikes, do I need the permit number if Matt and I are a bit late? Someone please send it to me! If no one sees this I will call one of you at about 7 a.m. or so. I hope to be out of Flag before then. Hopefully. I have to take an online final for one of my soc classes right now! Yes, really, at 4 a.m!

Or, you can call me with the number, if you want to.

See you all there!

Glad you had fun. I would have rather been there than at the holiday party but it is what it is. Maybe next year! Can't wait to see the pics.

Yeah, I tried to put a pic in. For some reason it just redirects to the front gallery page rather than the pic. Oh well.

He's adjusting well, staying in his kennel even with the door open when I'm home (door is closed when I'm not) today he touch his foot to the floor (first time in a week!!) not for long, but it looks promising! Smile

Glad you guys had a fun time. I heard the color was spectacular!! Sorry I missed out!!

Thanks for a great trip Ambika. It was great to see/meet everyone! Really fun! Aravaipa and side canyons we explored really gorgeous, very special place.

There was a paper on my windshield regarding the permit. It says to call them so I will call them tomorrow and give them the permit number.

We drove back to Flag via Roosevelt Lake. 24 years in AZ and I had never seen it before! Very pretty. Also saw Mormon Lake and Lake Mary.

Glad everyone had a good time! Wish we could have been there!

Did H2 while you were out there and my knee did ok. Not the best but promising.... it should heal. I am not used to having to guard my knees or any other part of me so this is wierd for me but I want to make sure I can continue to hike so I am going to give it time to heal.

Looking forward to pictures!

Wow what a beautiful place!! Everything I was expecting and more. The sun hitting the water and the beautiful yellow and orange colors mixed with green with the canyon backdrop .... Just gorgeous!

Water wasn't as cold as I expected it to be either.
Wonderful weekend and lots of laughs and entertainment in evening. A really nice escape for me.

Thanks Ambika for putting this together. Tibber thanks for dinner too! Nice to have a hot meal on the way back and I have lunch for today Wink

what a wonderful weekend.

thanks to all for welcoming me and keeping me safe on my semi-annual, lumbering bear backpack! i'll always remember the incredible beauty of this amazing desert canyon, as well as the rounds of laughter, warm fires, stunning fall colors, and, no doubt this morning, the fatigue!!

if you're interested, i came across this great abbey essay on aravaipa from 1982:
http://www.nytimes.com/1982/01/03/travel/in-the-land-of-laughing-waters.html

i'll post some pix soon.
