OK, if we use this as a guideline...

1. Physically challenging
2. mentally challenging
3. bonds participants socially
4. pretty as hell.
5. very large or heroic: impressive by virtue of greatness of size, scope, or heroism
6. with a heightened sense of danger and adventure
7. doable in a day (a long day, even an all night, but without camping) let's not include backpacking

What AZ hikes would we put on an epic list?

Jumpup Canyon

Humphrey from the inner basin. ~16 miles RT, 4-5K EC

AZ Trail from Mexico to Sunnyside Canyon, 15-17 miles. 2,800+ feet up. AKA Huachuca Crest Trail, need a shuttle, and probably car camp at Parker Lake the night before, Pancakes and sausage for everyone, on me, for breakfast.

Mt Baldy loop, 17 miles, car camp Winn CG

Circum-navigate Barnhadt Peak, 16-17 miles, Barnhardt TH

Back Pack-Club Cabin, 2-3 nighter

Here is one that I attempted up in FLagstaff twice and failed both times due to weather and time restrictions
THis hike startes at Mount Elden Lookout trailhead. Head up the trail untill you get to the Sunset Trail at the ridge. Take the Sunset trail across the ridge over to the Hart trail. Once the trail starts to head back down the mountain on the other side get off the trail. Take the ridge across to Little Elden's summit. This hike requires alot of hiking over huge boulders and working your way through them. It can be a time consuming proccess, but its fun. Once you reach your destination you retrace your steps back to the trail and back down to the parking lot. This is about a 14 mile day. I'd reccomend this as a summer hike.

Is the destination Little Elden's summit?

Wish I could suggest something but I am usually "along for the ride" as I don't know any of the good hikes yet. You all are my window to the world of hiking and I do appreciate you for that!

Maybe some day I will be a well informed hiker like the rest of you.... until then I am gonna just keep tagging along for the fun!

How about a Rim-Rim-Rim for an Epic....
0) It can be done in one very long day & night!!! (or day for Sidhayes!)
1) Its long & has some serious elevation gain
2) Water is less of an issue (or a non-issue) after May
3) We could easily have a sub-epic of Rim-Rim ( Epic in its own right for many) ( Need some rooms at N.Rim and shuttle back)
4) Gives the option for Rim-River-Rim for those that want to do a day trip...

Paria ?

Paria would be a blast! Other than that, there are a few other Canyon dayhikes that can challenge one. The Boucher - Hermit loop is one, and the New Hance (Red Canyon) - Tonto - Grandview is another, and the Hermit - Bright Angel loop is fun too...

Yes, Little Eldens summit is the destination. If you want to you can also do the main summit which would tag on 1/4 a mile hiking either direction. From what I understand there is not much of a view from Little Elden, but the hike is really beautiful. The section I have done was really nice. Hiking over the boulders was really fun.

Another candidate for Grandcanyon epic Kaibab-Tonto-B.Angel loop. This is logistically quite easy as a day trip.

Again this allows for a graduated EPIC...

1) S. Kaibab - Tonto - B.angel
2) S.Kaibab - River- B.Angel
3) Ofcourse...Rim-Rim-Rim

Hey, this is one outstanding hike! Gabriele and I tried this one today.

We got going a little late, and then got hung-up on I-10 because of a big accident. GB threw it into 4-wheel drive and we bisected the median and did a 10 mile detour and back to I-10.

We finally got to the trail head an hour late of our requirement. We'd have done the summit round-trip (16.2+) in under eight hours, but we made a common-sense decision, to turn back at 2pm no matter what. Descending that trail, there's no way that you'd want to do the last miles in the dark! And the temps, after dark, in those canyons, fall straight down.

But we had lunch within a half-mile of the summit (aye, there lies the vertical chalenge...)! 4300' vertical gain net. And "thinner" air up there at 8400+

BTW Sid does this in a little over two hours, round trip.

We trail ran about half the descent (8.1 miles), because it's almost easier than trying to hike at a steady pace (Thanks GB, I was feeling it from hiking on Sat/Sun/Tues and only weaklings ask for mercy, right?). Jim.

Woods Canyon
Mt. Wrightson
Sentinel Peak via the Chiricahua Crest
Kachina-Weatherford-Humphries LOOP
Buckskin Gulch
Mazatzal Peak
Highline Trail (!)
Steeple Mesa Trail
Wet Beaver Canyon (supposedly it is doable in one day w/ a shuttle)
Sabino Canyon (you can start at Marshall Gulch and follow this canyon cross-country all the way down-though this may no longer be very scenic)
Rincon Peak
Rim to Rim to Rim
