That one looks like one Ithink I've had in the tree next door in early Spring. Does the Western Tanager have a retetoire of 3-4? A chatter, a twill a song. I only saw a glimpse of it once w/binoculars. It was hidden in the leaves, but it sure looks like it. I've been wondering for years what kind of bird it was since I can't see it but only hear. It is a wonderful sound to listen to in the mornings with coffee out on the patio.

The tanager looks about the third of the size smaller and some diff. in color. Thanks though, maybe a return camping trip to resolve.

I sent this rather poor photo to my sister who's life passion is to travel the world over, and sit in the woods for hours on end waiting for a bird to show up... not my idea of fun, but she is good at it. Here is her reply after looking at the photo:

"No doubt about it – It’s a Western Tanager! BEAUTIFUL bird! We saw lots of them along the river banks when we rafted in Colorado. And interestingly, although their range comes east only as far as far easter Colorado, I saw one up the river here at Hok-si-la park. There happened to be a bird group in the park that day and we refound it for them so it was really a thrill. Always fun to find something out of its range!!"

She lives in SE Minnesota, but birds all over the world and the US. Hok-si-la park is near her home in Wabash, Minnesota. She's even been invited by the academic world to help with thier spotting/counting activities. To me it's a pretty yellow bird... to her, it's an entire ecosystem unfolding before her eyes.

Well done. I was thinking that a birder would be a good resouce for this mystery. I saw a bird once and told my brother's girlfriend who was an avid birder. She asked me "How many black stripes on it's face, did it have 3 or 4 white marks on it's wings, did it fly straight or jerky?" and a few dozen other questions that I had no idea about. I just knew the general color scheme and that it had feathers. Rolling Eyes
