Last year the water hike to Wet Beaver was a blast!

SandeJ and I have decided to lead another group back this year. Here's the information from last year's hike:

Meet at the trailhead parking lot at 8:30am
Approx 6-7 hours in the area then we'll head for a late lunch or early dinner.

This is a day hike. The trail is wide and easy to follow for the first part. If you like Sedona and love West Fork of Oak Creek, try this creek. The distance is 3 easy flat miles (or 6 roundtrip) to the main waterhole and then however far we can get after that. Elevation gain 280ft. The rest of the hike is in and out of the water. Participants should expect to be wet and prepared for swimming or floating AND a pile of fun.

Driving Directions:
Directions to trail: From Phoenix go North on Highway I-17 to the Sedona Exit which is SR179. Do not turn left to go to Sedona. Instead turn right, this is FR618. Follow FR618 2 miles and turn left onto FR618A. Follow the signs to the trailhead. This is a great trail. Carpools can be set up on an as needed basis.

RECOMMENDED GEAR
-water shoes
-dry sack
-tube or other floation device
-hiking pole
-quick dry clothes or swim suit

Let's get together for a day of just plain old fashion fun!

Awesome you guys!
This might be a good trial run for my knee. Fingers crossed that I'll get the release from the doc in time.

Hey June 27, is my b-day. I having been dreaming of Wet Beaver Creek, since I did a swim pack up there in 1996 . Sounds great as a day hike! Some great hikes in Sedona last weekend.

Any campgrounds in that area?

Oh Early Happy Birthday!
Hey here is something I learned the other day.........from Matt Gilbert's canyoneering class about terms.

In General:
Canyoning=dayhike or multiple day hike in a non-technical canyon
Canyoneering= Technical skills required........either single day or multiple days

I have another friend from Tucson that uses the term "swim pack"...as in, "we did a swim pack".....that must be a local phrase for an overnight/multi day water hike??

Is your friend a member of SAHC? In the mid 90's we did do multi day packpacks in canyons like Wet Beaver, West Clear Creek. We would put our stuff in compactor bags and throw our backpacks in the water and swim with them across the pools.
Great Fun!

Last year was a LOT of fun, and I wish I could join you this year, unfortunately I'll be rappelling down some canyons in the Zion area that weekend... Dang.. Confused

There is a campground at the same area, just down the road from the trailhead where the road crosses Wet Beaver Creek. Usually quite a few folks there but it is not huge. Also some off the main road camping in many areas nearby that would work, but it may be a little hot.... Surprised

ALSO..just a reminder that the hike OUT later in the day is a HOT one...(dependent on the temps of course!)

Water shoes, etc...

watershoes just means old sneakers or hiking boots, anything you feel comfortable wearing in the water and if they get trashed out you can throw them away.
I also wear thin socks rather than than thick since you don't want to get blisters on your feet, but that's my preference.

As far as a bag to keep your stuff dry, don't buy anything expensive, a compactor bag and rubber band will do.

Rubber band, what a great idea! I was using a garbage bag, but didn't know how to close up the top! Thanks!
