I still have the emails he sent me the day before he passed away. Or maybe it was the same day, not sure. One of them was a joke he'd forwarded. The other was a quick message.

I met him only once but we ended up talking for hours. We kept in touch over the years via email, and trading barbs and jokes on the websites. Here it is, at 3:16 p.m., 3/2/09:

Tomorrow, I go in for surgery to replace a ligament in my left elbow that was torn several months ago. I'll have my left arm just about fully immobilized for six week so will make it tough to respond to e-mails with only one hand. So please send only stuff you consider important.

Thanks!

BTW, injury was caused by Richie Rich leaving one of his toys for me to slip on and land with full force on ceramic tile with left elbow. He loves setting such bobbie traps for me;I just removed him from my will! That oughta teach him!

For those of you who knew John and Rich, just want to let you all know that Rich is still doing well. Rich was 14 last December 15th. That is old for a basenji and his continued health is a testament to the excellent care he received with Hooli. We see John every day when we look at Rich. Like Diane, it fondly reminds us of our friend.
