The only reason I researched this area a bit is because I live in walking distance from Falcon Field, a Mesa municipal airport with a unique history.
This 7 page history of Falcon Field is from the Mesa Government website.
http://mesaaz.gov/falcon_field/history/falcon_begin.aspx
This is not dry history but is filled with names and personal stories.
One paragraph:
The families of Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale and Phoenix took the British to their hearts. They took them into their homes and treated them like family. Organized by the squadron adjutant, the individual members of each class were "adopted" by Arizona families during their stay. When they went back to England, the next class was likewise distributed among willing Arizona families. Every boy was assured of a place to have Sunday dinner and a source of clean laundry. When, four years later, it was all over, the British Embassy made a special point to express their gratitude to the people of Arizona. _________________ Become a skilled GPS user and it will set you free! |

When I first came to AZ, I went to Falcon Field to the museum. The volunteers are older pilots and they loved talking about the planes and their experiences. That was the first time I had heard this air field was used as a training site for British air craft, I had no idea and never thought about where/how those pilots were trained back then. I had seen several small planes that looked familiar to planes being flown from the small airport near my home in WI. Turns out they were both American and British. Funny how small places are involved in Big pieces of history _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)
