hey all, we are flying into Vegas in a few days, checking out Red Rocks and possibly Lake Mead, and then heading to Death Valley to camp. Anyone familiar with the park? How many days should we give ourselves to really see the whole park a do a couple good hikes? The park's website says 33 is the average low - would you say it's accurate?

Letty is the expert, she should be back from the Galiuro's soon and will likely have some information for you.

Well, lets just say two weeks wouldn't be enough. Depends on what you like and want to do. You can spend a lot of time driving and the place is just huge. My favorite places are the Racetrack, from there you can hike Uhebe peak, and explore Lippincott mine area, also you are near a hike I have yet to do---Corridor Canyon.
Telescope peak is a great hike, but in winter it's probably mountaineering type stuff with crampons and ice axe. Plus you have to hike into TH, normally they close it and you have to hike in from the Kilns.
For sand dunes either the Eureka dunes or the Ibex dunes, unfortunately opposite ends of the park, are my favorite.
Fall Canyon, Mosaic are nice hikes not too far off the beaten path.

I can't tell you about campsites because I always "backcountry" camp when I am there, the only campground I've been in is the one at the TH of Telescope, I forget the name, it's really nice and no fee, but no water, etc.

The ultimate Death Valley guide is "Hiking Death Valley" by Michel Diconnet. I highly recommend it. Also there are several Death Valley boards, DeathValley.com. Death Valley.net and PanamintCharlie.com.

Have fun---I'll be returning to that area in Jan/Feb time frame.

And yes---can get cold there at night--really cold!!
