My girlfriend and I are planning a car tour around the state next week and we want to do a nice hike in the Sedona area. Ideally it would be 2-5 hours with no more than 1500 feet of vertical climbing. Rough trails are no problem; we hike nasty stuff all the time.

Any suggestions? Confused

What about Wilson Mountain? Is that too much elevation?
It's been on my list for a while. Secret Canyon might be good too. Both will have lots of other people though.

From what I have read, an out-and-back from Slide Rock to Sterling Pass and over to Vultee Arch looks about right: 5+ miles, 1400 feet of climb, nice goal. Only problem might be snow in the pass, oy...

How about Secret Canyon out and back?

I thought of that, but it's kinda long and has no big vistas,
and no decent climbing either. Remote and secluded yes,
but there's tons of that kind of thing around Kingman.

What we want is drama!

Surprised

The Wilson climb would do it, but my leg is a bit gamey
right now and I don't want to push it that hard, alas.

A nice hike with some great views would be Soldier's Pass/Brin's Mesa loop. It's about 5.5 miles but only an elevation gain of 600 feet or so. Nice views from the top of Brins Mesa heading down Soldier's Pass trail plus there is a big sinkhole called Devil's Kitchen which is about 50-60 feet deep and 140 feet across.

Happy Trails!!!

I did this hike a few months back, if you want a bit more challenge, do it in the opposite direction. It's a nice hike and the view at the mesa is fabulous.

Enjoy!

Considering the snow a comin', we might have to
forgo Sterling Pass and do Brins Mesa since that's
900 feet lower. Or we might just go for it anyway!

Razz

One thing's for sure, we won't have to rub elbows
with a lot of overfed tourists...

We're also planning to ski at Flag the next day and
then waltz down the North Kaibab a bit the day after.
Should be an epic week with all the white stuff all
over the place.

Only problem is, I've never skied...

Shocked

Yes I bet all the overfed tourists will either be at Paradise Bakery or sucking down 600 calorie lattes at Starbucks and not out on the trails.

If you've never skied before you might want to try cross country skiing at the Nordic center before you try downhill. I've done both and cross country seems easier to me. Be safe and have a wonderful time!

I once mountain biked that place and it seemed like it would be fun to do on skis. Wasn't that great on a bike, too soft mostly!

Well, I got to ski on the Mountain in a howling blizzard for my
first day on skis, and I LOVED IT! Parallel turns no less. Hey,
what can I say, I got skillz. Only problem was those loooong
sloooow rides up the lift, rocking around in the "breeze." Oy...

I'll be posting a few select shots of the fantastic hiking we got
'cause of all that powder very shortly in a new thread, and it's
good stuff, yup.

Crazy

PostPosted: 12/27/2008, 8:34 pm    Post subject: So new album posters need not apply? Reply to topic Reply with quote

I just tried to post a new photo album but became very frustrated
because I couldn't find the "new album" link. Finally I noticed that
I have to beg an admin for permission to do this, but strangely
that link leads to a page which informs me that the function
is blocked.

So what's the deal here, no photo posting for us regular folk?
If that's true, why did I bother to become a member?
