Here's a hiking quote!

One of my all-time favorites is from Jack Handey:
“Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes.” _________________ Anyone can make a hike harder. The skill comes in making it easier. Dosatéhigo nasádo |

How about we just walk away and leave this thread to die a quick death. I, for one, would greatly appreciate it so I'd stop receiving PM's asking me to kill it. _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

Aw, come on Hooli, you're really getting PMs about a quote that has to do with hiking?
I thought that this was a "Community" where people can discuss topics that are on their mind. Or is it only if certain among us deem the topic worthy? I thought that it was the former, not the latter. My mistake. |

Huh? Am I missing something here? I see only four posts on this thread prior to mine.... why would you need to kill this thread? _________________ ~~~Diane~~~

Diane, I was concerned that this was just going to be a carry over from the earlier one I locked and rather than be reactive, I decided to be proactive and head off any personal attacks before they happen rather than after.
Don't know how I got elected as the AZH cop, but seems like when posts start getting personal, I start getting PM's asking that I lock it. That's what happened to the Did You Vote topic and didn't want to continue under a new topic. _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

Well those are traits I've never been recognized for before. You must have me confused with Richie Rich! _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

We talk about a lot of things other than hiking in this board and that is ok, we are among friends. I would, however, like to think that we are all mature enough to see that if our words sound personally hurtful, or offensive that this forum is not the place to use them. There are lots of forums and message boards designed for just that kind of communication. Perhaps those who want to communicate that way can take those comments to one of those boards and come back here when they have something more positive to say!
By the way Hooli, I gotta say that locking the other post was a good call in my opinion. As for this thread and it's title some people just can't help but test the fates! I believe every one on this thread is behaving themselves though... _________________ ~~~Diane~~~

Here's another Jack Handey:
"A funny thing to do is, if you're out hiking and your friend gets bitten by a poisonous snake, tell him you're going to go for help, then go about ten feet and pretend that *you* got bit by a snake. Then start an argument with him about who's going to go get help. A lot of guys will start crying. That's why it makes you feel good when you tell them it was just a joke." _________________ But let the mind beware, that though the flesh be bugged, the circumstances of existence are pretty glorious

Why is it so hard for Americans to talk about politics rationally and with civility, even with difference of opinions? I hear politics and hiking don't mix; I really hear that in all walks of life: church, when I was in the military, family, friends, martial arts, etc. Why can't we be adults when expressing our opinions and have no underlying anger, finger-pointing or generalization that if you are in a group of people (military, Baptist, Catholic, middle class, ethnicity, gender) that you are guilty of whatever your point is? I don't think any problem will ever get resolved if we can't discuss "politics" with friends or family. I think that is the biggest, lamest cowardice I face currently, is when a political discussion is brought up (in real life, not the internet) and a friend or family member says, "we don't discuss politics here." Where do we discuss them then? At a graveyard? In the shower? To our pets? Our children are going to suffer great tragedy because the indifference of the common person to talk about important issues, let alone act on them. _________________ "Much is not dared because it seems hard, much seems hard because it is not dared" |
